Computer hardware and software are often confusing to first-time computer users. If you are new to computers, we offer you a quick guide to the main types of hardware and what they do. Hardware is, generally speaking, the components of a computer that are physical things you can touch and see. Software is the stuff you use on the computer like the different programs.
The main types of hardware include:
Central Processing Unit (CPU)
The CPU is the part of your computer that processes the computer’s data. It takes the input and turns it into an output. The speed at which a CPU processor works will determine how well the computer works.
The memory of your computer refers to chips that store data on your computer. There are different types of memory. RAM or random access memory is what your computer uses to operate. The more RAM you have, the more applications you can use at the same time. The second type of memory is the capacity of your computer and is measured in gigabytes (GB).
The hard drive is the part of the computer that stores software. All your programs, operating system, and other files are stored on the hard drive. This information does not go away when you turn off the computer. It remains on the hard drive. The operating system and other programs run directly from the hard drive when you start it up.
Input devices refer to your keyboard, mouse, trackballs, or touchpads. These devices are what you use to work on the computer and input data or commands.
Display Screen/ Monitor
The display screen or monitor of the computer refers to the screen where you can see what is happening on the computer. The programs, games, pictures, etc. are viewed on the screen.
These drives are for DVDs, CDs, and Blu-Ray discs. You use these drives to play CDs or DVDs. It is still sometimes used to install new programs on the computer, although, most of that can be done over the Internet these days.
These are the main hardware parts of a computer. Now you know what the different parts are called and what they do.
